About “Let Your Life Speak- Listening for the Voice of Vocation”
With wisdom, compassion, and gentle humor, Parker Palmer invites us to listen to the inner teacher and follow its lead toward a sense of meaning and purpose. Telling stories from his own life and the lives of others who have made a difference, he shares insights gained from darkness and depression as well as fulfillment and joy, illuminating a pathway toward vocation for all who seek the true calling of their lives. Palmer writes, “Before you tell your life what you intend to do with it, listen for what it intends to do with you. Before you tell your life what truths and values you have decided to live up to, let your life tell you what truths you embody, what values you represent.” This study encourages participants to listen to and accept our true selves, our limits, but also, our potential. Through his writing, and your reading, and small-group conversation, we will explore how our vocation does not have to simply be a goal, but instead, it is a gift to be received.
If you’ve never participated in a small-group or book study, this is a great place to begin. Each week, assigned readings range from 20-40 pages and allow participants new to small-group community an opportunity to get into a rhythm of regular reading and contemplation. Classes will be one hour and include a time of prayer to help participants learn to listen for God, discussion of the readings and exploring various call stories from the Bible.
